Battle Report: Sons of Horus vs Imperial Fists and Space Wolves
Battle Report (20th May 2017)
First battle report - well, you've got to start somewhere!
A bit of history with this one - in a previous battle the Sons of Horus had a convincing win against the Space Wolves and Imperial Fist and they demanded a rematch. Read on for the result...
Combatants
Sons of Horus - Lewis
Sons of Horus (Luna Wolves) - Tom (XVth)
vs.
Imperial Fists - Dave
Space Wolves - Liam
Setup
The battle was 6000pts aside, and with a Primarch and a warhound titan on each side mayhem and destruction was assured. It was standard Dawn of War deployment and Mission 6 from the Age of Darkness book - War of Lies. Sons of Horus won the roll off and chose for the Fists and Wolves to deploy first. With Horus on side it was quite likely they could seize the initiative after all.
The Space Wolves set up an offensive line including 2 vindicators, a land raider achilles, and a spartan containing Russ |
With setup complete it was time for Turn 1, but not before the Sons of Horus successfully gained the first turn, if only just on a 4.
Turn One
Turn One - Sons of Horus
With a good percentage of the force in reserve the turn was a quick one. Both Lewis and I dropped in an anvillus dreadclaw with contemptors in at our opponents' front line. I moved up a veteran tactical squad and a reaver squad onto two objectives, but the highlight was when Lewis' deredeo exploded the Space Wolves' spartan leaving Russ stuck out in the open.
Turn One - Imperial Fists and Space Wolves
The Space Wolves held strong on one of their objectives and the Fists had some scouts that had infiltrated on the centre objective, again holding strong. Dave's titan also had a good attempt at ours, but thankfully it was still standing. Liam managed to get rid of my anvillus, and Dave destroyed Lewis', but the contemptors still managed to survive.
Turn Two
Turn Two - Sons of Horus
This is when the fun began for our team. With a damocles command rhino meaning that I could modify reserve rolls and my legion benefits, it was only on a roll of two consecutive 1s that my reserves weren't coming in. As such, Horus managed to deepstrike behind the Imperial Fists force with a retinue of 9 Justaerin and a Primus Medicae, Malghurst and 5 Justaerin outflanked behind the wolves while a vet. squad with flames walked in front of them, and a jetbike Sky Slayer Squadron got behind the Fist's titan. Saying that, my fire raptor still didn't make it in and Lewis didn't manage to get in Abaddon and his Justaerin.
Turn Two - Imperial Fists and Space Wolves
All the Imperial Fists marines surround Horus and his retinue. Count them: all.
This included the emergence of Sigismund, some templars, some breachers, a contemptor and a standard dreadnought. Needless to say the combat round hurt, with only Horus surviving and the Imperial Fists barely being scratched. The Space Wolves had another shot at the contemptor, but it saved all but one of its invuln saves.
Turn Three
Turn Three - Sons of Horus
Things went bad very quickly for Dave and Liam, Abaddon and the fire raptor arrived, and between the jetbikes finishing off their warhound and ours taking out Russ things were not going well. My vets and Justaerin took out a squad of wolves and the contemptor finished off the achilles and we managed to finish off the vindicator too, but in retaliation the Fists finished off Horus and they started turning their attention to Abaddon's squad.
Turn Three - Imperial Fists and Space Wolves
Sigismund took the Fists and charged them into Abaddon - apparently taking out the Warmaster wasn't enough for them! Needless to say the fury dealt to Horus was transferred onto Abaddon and he fell. A dreadnought charged into one of Lewis' tactical squads and the last remaining Wolf squad shot some bolter rounds into a vet. squad. Thankfully that didn't hurt too much.
The remains of what was once a great war machine. |
Turn Four
Turn Four - Sons of Horus
This was basically a clean up operation as Maloghurst and his Justaerin finished off the last squad of Wolves and Lewis' squads along with my fire raptor finished off a good amount of the Imperial Fists. Dave and Liam called the game, so as a formality it was time to total up our victory points.
Final Points and Post-Game Wrap Up
With Dave and Liam having 2 Warlord kills, and Lewis and I having only 1 Warlord kill but also Line Breaker, both teams were sitting pretty on 2 points. However, we had 4 objectives whereas Dave and Liam had none so it was time to roll for our additional points.
The first roll was good with a 4, knocking us up to 4 victory points. Then I happened.
I rolled three consecutive 6s on the victory points table, meaning a minimum of minus 3 victory points. It didn't matter what I rolled from that point on. We'd lost (sorry again Lewis).

Fate can be fickle.... |
Over all it was a very fun game - there was a nice ebb and flow to it and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. In hindsight I threw a little too much of my forces at the Space Wolves but it clearly didn't impact the game too much.
Stay tuned for future battle reports!
